Many people are surprised to learn that what was the original use of a chainsaw was actually related to medical procedures rather than forestry or construction. Early chainsaw-like instruments were developed in the late 18th century to assist surgeons during difficult childbirth procedures.

One notable example was the Symphysiotomy, a procedure in which the pelvic joint was cut to create additional space during childbirth. In 1780, Scottish doctors John Aitken and James Jeffray developed an early flexible saw designed to make this procedure more practical and controlled. It consisted of a fine, manually operated chain with small cutting teeth.

Over time, the basic chain-sawing concept was adapted for other purposes. As technology improved, powered chainsaws became useful tools for forestry, woodworking, and land management. Their design evolved considerably, eventually producing the motorized chainsaws commonly recognized today.
