Many people are surprised to discover that the answer to what was the original use of a chainsaw has little to do with cutting trees. The earliest chainsaw-like instrument was developed in the late eighteenth century as a medical tool. It was designed to assist doctors during certain childbirth procedures by removing small sections of bone when complications made natural delivery impossible. Although the idea sounds unsettling today, medical practices and available technology were very different during that period.

The original device was much smaller than the powerful machines used in modern forestry. It featured a hand-cranked mechanism with a chain of tiny cutting teeth that allowed surgeons to perform procedures more efficiently than with traditional manual instruments. As medicine advanced and safer surgical techniques became available, this specialized tool gradually fell out of use in hospitals.

Later, engineers recognized that the chain-and-blade concept could be adapted for woodworking and logging. Over time, improvements in engines, materials, and cutting efficiency transformed the design into the chainsaws commonly seen today. These machines became essential for forestry, construction, disaster cleanup, and landscaping.
